SCOTLAND PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS
Seven days photographing the mood, weather and wild beauty of Scotland.
The Wild Heart of Scotland
From white Atlantic beaches and lonely mountain lochs to ancient castles, rugged coastlines and peaks disappearing into mist, Scotland is a landscape that never seems to stand still.
Weather moves through quickly. Light breaks across hillsides. Tides reshape the coast. Mountains appear and vanish behind cloud.
And sometimes, for just a few minutes, everything comes together.
My Scotland workshops are about slowing down enough to notice those moments — spending time in wild places, following the changing conditions and photographing the landscape for how it feels, not simply how it looks.
That feels much more Scotland to me.
Then I’d make the three destination cards equally evocative:
ISLE OF HARRIS & LEWIS
Where Atlantic light meets the edge of the land
White beaches, turquoise water, dark mountains and weather rolling in from the ocean. Harris & Lewis can move from stillness to drama in minutes.
NORTH EAST SCOTLAND
Castles, cliffs and the wild North Sea
Ancient ruins stand above rugged cliffs, fishing villages cling to the coast and shifting North Sea weather brings atmosphere to one of Scotland’s most overlooked landscapes.
ASSYNT
Mountains rising from an ancient wilderness
Lonely lochs, open moorland and some of Scotland’s most distinctive peaks. A landscape where mist, weather and fleeting light constantly change what you see.
WHAT MAKES SCOTLAND SO SPECIAL TO PHOTOGRAPH?
Scotland has a way of changing character constantly.
A mountain can disappear into mist and reappear minutes later.
Light can break through a storm and completely transform a hillside.
A beach can feel calm and almost tropical one moment, then wild and Atlantic the next.
The weather is rarely just background.
It becomes part of the photograph.
That’s what keeps me coming back to these landscapes.
Not because they’re always beautiful in an obvious way.
But because they’re alive.
Weather, water, light and time are constantly reshaping what’s in front of you.
MY APPROACH
I don’t want a Scotland workshop to feel like a race between famous viewpoints.
For me, the best photographs usually come when there’s enough time to slow down, watch the weather and properly work with a landscape.
That might mean waiting beside a loch while cloud moves across the mountains.
It might mean standing on a beach long after the obvious light has gone.
Or changing the plan completely because the weather is doing something more interesting somewhere else.
I keep my workshops small, my plans flexible and the photography at the centre of everything.
If you want advice, another opinion on a composition or help working with difficult light and weather, I’m there.
If you’ve found something you love and want to quietly work on it for the next hour, I’ll give you the space to do exactly that.
The aim is simple: spend time in extraordinary places and give the landscape enough time to reveal itself.
SMALL GROUPS. PLENTY OF SPACE.
My Scotland workshops are deliberately kept small.
That gives everyone room to photograph in their own way rather than standing shoulder-to-shoulder at the same composition.
It also means we can react quickly.
If the weather changes, we move.
If the light is working, we stay.
If one person wants advice while someone else wants complete silence, both can have exactly that.
No tripod queues. No rushed locations. No photography conveyor belt.
